The wash-day guide is out, step by step: read the how-to of the month
About us

Hair and body care, hands on.

We cover hair and body care the way it actually happens: at the sink, in the shower, in the barber's chair, on a Sunday wash day and at a baby's bath time. Technique matters as much as product.

01Our story

Six issues, wash day by wash day.

Body of Work launched in the summer of 2025 as the hair and body title of VOL Collective, the independent editorial studio in New York. The first issue carried eight founder interviews, each with a step-by-step box showing how the founder uses their own product.

Our founders are people who fixed their own problem first: a bleach-burnt head, postpartum shedding, coils no shelf product understood, a toddler with eczema. We ask them to show the work. We write for every gender and every hair type, and we never shame a bald patch, a body or a budget.

Today 32,400 people read Body of Work each month, most of them in the US, and 8,100 get Wash Day on Sunday mornings. Our readers are 52 percent women, 41 percent men and 7 percent nonbinary or unstated, and 47 percent buy hair or body products for someone else at home.

Body of Work, year by year

  1. 2023

    VOL Collective begins

VOL Collective publishes its first interview in New York. The best answers in its beauty interviews keep coming from founders describing exactly what they do at the sink.

  2. 2024

    Shop talk

Our editors start sitting in on wash days, barbershop afternoons and bath times, and building a list of founders who will show their routine step by step.

  3. 2025

    Issue 01

Body of Work launches in the summer with eight founder interviews, each with a step-by-step box from the founder's own routine.

  4. 2026

Issue 06 and the first Open Chair

The how-to guides launch in July, starting with a two-hour wash day for curls, and Wash Day passes 4,000 subscribers. This autumn, founders and a trichologist demonstrate their routines live in our Orchard Street studio.
