A cold walk in Chicago, a tight face after the heat kicked on, a shower shelf full of bottles that did not fit the life. Huron began there. From that start came a compact New York range of everyday basics made with a small set of plant extracts, regular morning and night habits, and fragrance meant to stay with you through work and weather.
Huron carries the name of the block in Chicago where Matt Mullenax lived when his skin felt its roughest. Outdoor wind bit, indoor air ran dry, and long hours left his face drawn and his body tired from helmets and damp clothing. Keeping that address says a lot about his approach.
Mullenax spent his childhood in Cincinnati, Ohio dealing with what he describes as bad skin. He played football at Brown, packed pants in early work at Bonobos, spent a period in Chicago in finance, then completed an MBA at Stanford. During the summer of 2017 he asked about 1,500 men about personal care shopping. During January 2018 he operated a test brand in Midwest markets to check range and language. He then joined with Matt Teri, who had spent decades creating products for Tom Ford, Clinique and Lab Series, and introduced Huron in July 2019 with body wash, face wash and face moisturizer.
Reading closely, what stands out is how spare Huron stays. A team of four with outside partners. A tight lineup made for daily use. Plant matter picked for a defined job in the formula. Ginseng, black walnut leaf and witch hazel to clean deeply and refresh in the shower. Bamboo to offer a mild exfoliating touch with no harsh scour. Fragrance handled as part of the routine, not as an extra.
Your 20 dollars Body Wash with ginseng, black walnut leaf and witch hazel is still the original and the top seller. How do those three plants act in the shower, from first lather through the final rinse?
That wash opened the line, so we gave it plenty of attention. In the shower you ask for three things. Clear the day away, keep skin at ease, keep a scent you enjoy. Ginseng helps bring that revived feeling. Black walnut leaf helps the mix wash deeply while avoiding a stripped sense. Witch hazel leaves that toned, fresh finish. Lather daily in the shower as body wash, spread over shoulders, chest, legs, then rinse well.
Foam counted as well. We aimed for full yet quick to wash off. No residue. Skin should rest soft, not pulled. And the fragrance should sit near without taking over. The blends are Sea Salt and Driftwood, Citrus and Eucalyptus, Sandalwood and Amber. Every version gives a rich cleanse that leaves skin soft and a scent that remains near into the morning. It remains a workplace pick because we reach for it ourselves. If it failed in our own showers, it would not be on sale.
You grew up in Cincinnati with what you call bad skin, then Brown football made it worse with helmets and sweaty gear. What did that daily rubbing teach you about what a routine must handle?
As a child I had bad skin. That followed me. At Brown, playing football, you spend your life inside a helmet and wet gear. My skin paid for it. I sampled drugstore lines, dermatologist picks, suggestions from mens blogs. Yet nothing seemed to click. Either too aggressive, or no effect, or plainly built for another person.
It showed me a routine must survive actual days. Perspiration, chill, parched indoor air, late evenings. I had no interest in ten stages. I wanted a cleanser that truly washed, a moisturizer that kept my face at ease, items I would grab without a second thought. Attend to small things and large things will look after themselves. That sentence stayed with me. When basics are solid, used morning and evening, everything else turns simpler.
Huron is named for the Chicago street you lived on where some of your skin troubles were worst. Why keep that address on the label instead of leaving it in the past?
Huron names the Chicago street where I lived when some of my skin issues peaked. Keeping it felt truthful. Winters in Chicago hit hard. Cold air outdoors and arid air indoors. My skin grew tight and reactive. I was 25 and still picking up neon green body wash at CVS, and something felt off. What I bought did not line up with how I lived.
Holding onto Huron keeps me tied to that issue. We have no wish to feel remote or fussy. We began around basics that look, behave and work like more expensive goods, yet at a cost that did not strain the wallet. Paying 50 dollars plus for face wash made no sense to me. The street keeps in mind the user we mix for. Men who seek something improved, minus the markup, for skin that meets weather and work and sweat.

Face Wash at 18 dollars uses bamboo exfoliants and is made for morning and night without a rough scrub feel. What should a man new to face wash understand about exfoliation in the shower?
Many men either skip face wash or use one that leaves them tender. We sought a mild but thorough cleansing exfoliator with no sandpaper on face sensation. Bamboo fits there. Ground bamboo stalk offers a soft physical buff that helps clear oil and dull surface layers, then washes off. The goal is not to abrade. It is to keep the surface tidy so the face reads rested.
Cleanse morning and evening, tepid water, rub for thirty seconds, rinse. That rhythm counts more than pressure. Morning removes night oil. Evening removes perspiration, sunscreen and street air. Use gentle touch near eyes and jaw where shaving already strains skin. Add moisturizer while skin stays a touch damp. That plain sequence, wash then hydrate, forms the full habit for a beginner. It treats the barrier with care and helps the look of smoother texture across time.
In summer 2017 you surveyed about 1,500 men, then in January 2018 you launched a fake brand in Midwest markets to test range and claims. What did that slow testing at the sink show you before you poured anything real?
I refused to assume what men prefer. So during summer 2017 I polled around 1,500 guys on purchase habits. Where they bought, what they kept, what they avoided, which price seemed just. Then during January 2018 we floated a test brand aimed at Midwest markets. The same sort of buyer I recognized from Ohio. We checked range and messaging. Which trio mattered highest. Which phrasing earned a click.
Feedback came through plainly. Men preferred a smaller set done well. Body wash, face wash, face moisturizer for daily use. Scent and touch mattered to them. They wanted no science lecture across the front. We have the chance to serve better a shopper largely under-targeted with goods we know he seeks. That trial let us remain tight at the July 2019 launch. Get the daily bottles right, set a fair price, and allow the habit to carry it.
You teamed with Matt Teri, who spent decades crafting products for Tom Ford, Clinique and Lab Series. How does that partnership shape how you pick plant extracts and build a formula?
Matt understands prestige builds. He speaks straight with chemists. I carry the wearer view. I aimed to build a branded set of A plus items that looked, behaved and worked like higher end goods, yet at a price that did not strain the wallet. So each ingredient must justify its spot.
We never drop in a botanical for story value. We ask its role in the lather or across skin. Inside Body Wash we rely on ginseng, black walnut leaf and witch hazel to clean deeply, revive and deodorize. Witch hazel carries a long record as a distilled preparation of leaf and bark prized for an astringent touch. Black walnut leaf supplies tannins that leave skin feeling fresh and toned. Ginseng root extract lends a fresh, conditioned touch. Function leads. When an extract fails to back the wash or the after touch, it stays out.
Tend the small steps in the shower and the larger results will follow.

Face Moisturizer at 18 dollars blends pentavitin and sodium hyaluronate with niacinamide to smooth texture. How should a guy apply it after shower so the hydration truly lasts?
Spread on after showering morning and evening. Timing drives it. Following a warm shower, skin retains water. You aim to lock in that ease. Our moisturizer hydrates and smooths at once with pentavitin and sodium hyaluronate while niacinamide refines texture and fine lines. Skin left healthy looking and shine free is the target.
Pentavitin is a carbohydrate complex sourced from plants that adheres to skin and helps carry hydration through the day. Sodium hyaluronate grips water near the surface and helps skin appear plump and even. Niacinamide helps the look of balanced tone and finer texture. Take a dime sized dab, press across face and neck, not only dry spots. If you shave mornings, pause a minute to let skin calm, then apply. Evenings, repeat after Face Wash. No further coats required. Steady use holds the appearance even.

Bar Soap triple milled to last longer and rinse cleaner now sits beside Body Wash and Deodorant on the shelf. When should someone grab the bar at the sink, and when does the liquid work better?
It rests on spot and routine. Bar Soap is triple milled for extended wear, fuller foam and cleaner rinse. Triple milling passes the soap mass through rollers to compact and level it, so bars thin slower and foam turns creamy. Ours blends vitamin rich shea butter and coconut oil to leave skin smooth and soft and help curb moisture loss. Pick the bar at the basin for hands, or in the shower when you favor firm foam and a bar that air dries between rounds.
Liquid Body Wash fits when you want broader scent choice and a quick cleanse that softens skin. Swap scents with mood. Each offers that cologne grade aroma without weight. Rest the bar in a draining tray so it firms between showers. That single habit sets its life span. Both are made to outlast your day. One suits the sink edge, the other the shower caddy. Assurance that goes the distance begins with the one you will truly reach for daily.
Early on you led with 100 percent vegan body wash and lists of what you left out, then you shifted to writing what you call the internets best smell. Why did scent matter more than claims on skin?
Early on our message was earnest. It centered 100 percent vegan body wash, or certified cruelty free, or free from some long list of chemicals. All accurate. Our range is 100 percent vegan, sulfate free, paraben free, cruelty free, silicone free, phthalate free and aluminum free. Yet it moved no one.
Then we simply called it the internet’s best smell. That landed because fragrance decides choice at the shower. You lift the cap, you inhale, you tell within two seconds if it belongs to you. Results retain them, aroma attracts them. I prefer to speak on smell and touch over leading with vegan and clean labels. Not that standards lack weight. They count. But ritual opens with senses. When lather smells clean and current, like citrus plus eucalyptus or sea salt plus driftwood, you anticipate the wash. And anticipation is what cements a habit.
You run Huron as a four person team with a VP of marketing and a director of operations, plus outside partners. How does staying lean change the way you handle sourcing and scent?
Leanness demands focus. I prefer to remain lean and centered on a few aims over chasing each opening. We avoid twenty spins on one theme. We select a fragrance family, refine it until correct, trial it in our own showers, then extend it through Body Wash and Deodorant so mornings read as one.
For sourcing, Matt plus our chemists carry the load. No fields or stills of our own. We favor dependable extracts and scent houses able to repeat batch after batch. That steadiness outweighs pursuit of a scarce crop. A crew this small cannot absorb drift. We require ginseng, witch hazel, black walnut leaf and bamboo arriving clean, stable and on spec. Then effort goes to the mix. How scent stays on a towel. How a bar weathers on a dish. How wash behaves in hard water. Small details, reviewed often.
Closing note from the desk
What remains is that street name across the pack. A Chicago block where dry heat and long shifts left skin uneasy now sets the bar for each mix. Will it wash without stripping. Will it hydrate minus shine. Will its scent feel right to begin a day with.
Huron aimed for A plus staples that match higher end performance at prices that stay within reach. Looked at with care, that spells a shorter shelf, botanicals with clear tasks, stable morning and evening steps, and a compact crew ready to trial before it talks. Plant care stripped of ornament. Roots and leaves put to work in the shower.
